Do you eat for comfort?
Most people eat for reasons other than hunger sometimes – especially as there are so many handy snacks and meals available. Bars of chocolate, crisps, endless ‘convenient’ treats to buy and consume quickly. And often, when food is readily available, or a meal out seems to be ‘good value’, it’s tempting to eat whatever you fancy.
But – do you eat in order to deal with negative emotions?
Comfort eating is when you eat to make yourself feel better. You might eat because you feel:
-
bored
-
low
-
stressed
-
anxious
-
rejected
-
unloved
-
insecure
-
afraid
-
confused
-
angry
-
frustrated
-
excited
-
you want attention
-
you want a reward
-
there is something missing in your life
Maybe eating gives you a sense of security. But eating for emotional reasons means that you can lose control over what you eat and when you eat it. Therefore you may gain weight, and then feel bad about yourself. And then it’s likely that you’ll eat more to make yourself feel better.
It’s important to realize that the reason that you comfort eat now, probably started off many, many years ago.
Maybe something happened which made you uncomfortable – so you ate to feel better. You’ve probably forgotten what this was. So although diets may help, the chances are that when you experience negative emotions again – you resort to eating for comfort.
